Containment is the inverse function of protection. This is very important for protecting the surface from the nuisances and dangers generated by some facilities like hazardous material storage and hazardous processes. Examples include the storage of nuclear waste far from human activity and possibly even hazardous industrial plants such as nuclear reactors.
One of the most representative examples is the nuclear underground repository that is being currently constructed in the granite bedrock under the Onkalo site just miles from Olkiluoto, Finland. This repository will reach a depth of 500 m under the surface, providing a safe containment of the nuclear waste produced in the neighboring nuclear power station.
