University of Melbourne, Underground car park

Increased traffic in cities during the last decades has caused a quick congestion of surface parking. Therefore, new solutions were required.

Underground space to store vehicles was a suitable answer for this problem.

Since the sixties, many car parks have been built all over the world.
Although their aspect and the services provided (access, easier internal pedestrian circulation, better lighting, decoration) have tremendously improved since the first constructions.

However the constraints that designers and contractors must face are always of the same nature : geology and hydrogeology as well as environment related constraints.
